But he gradually becomes aware of his mistakes and tries to correct them. He feels even worse than usual. He tries so hard. And the Silence are not trying to kill him because of what he does but because of what he knows; so they hardly have the moral high ground. And thus of course, *we* sympathise with him; and it is a relentless attack that often *causes* his violent reactions: "they will run you down to your core..."
(And as I've said before, this is Series 6 we are talking about, beautiful deconstruction all over the place until “The Wedding of River Song”. It’s almost funny. I mean, either the Silence have an amazing sense of timing with Lake Silencio or Fate suddenly really, really hates him and wants to have fun. The universe is doing half the job in Series 6 if you think about it. It’s like everything is conspiring to push him to the brink and accept his doom.
One should basically just clap and go: “Yes, please do continue showing the incredibly old, self-loathing, guilt-ridden, emotionally unstable mess of an alien that he totally sucks, destroys everything, brings death and misery wherever he goes and that if he doesn’t die the universe will blow up. Absolutely nothing wrong here, we’re all ears, having a ball”.)
